SEPTENTRION
‘Septentrion’, Latin for Northern, is an installation consisting of drawings and research graphics to investigate the past, present and future of the psychology and impulses around identity construction, specific to queer, non-normative identities within the north of England.
The project paints a critical perspective on the effects of technology on identity expression, investigating a nostalgic early-form Web1 identity in 2004 when Peacock’s own queer, northern identity was taking shape. Three large-format drawings utilise colloquial amiability specific to the localised language of northern England. The drawings are supplemented by a research graphic observing the timelines of drivers involved in the project to open conversations on the mechanisms of Web3 amongst LGBTQI+ and non-normative identities and the ‘otherness’ of northern identity within the context of the London-centric focus of English culture. The project, in progress, is developed as a component of the Leeds-based East Street Arts, Convention House Art & Technology Residency in collaboration with Yorkshire MESMAC and Leeds City Council.
Keywords - Anthropology, Branding, Consumer Psychology, Cultural-Critique, Digital Sculpture, Fashion Concept, Fine-Art, Identity Design, Identity Systems, LGBTQI, Localised-Culture, Marginalisation, Marketing, Semiotics, Web1
